2021 NGV Architecture Competition

Date: 2021
Type: Competition
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Project Team: Steav Nissan in collaboration with ODR Architects & Malcolm Thomas

The proposed scheme works on several layers. The structure takes the form of a beacon and references the shape of a bell.

A series of identical tapered boxes are arrayed in a circular plan. We show four levels. At each level, the boxes are stepped back from the circumference, forming a pyramid. The sixteen interior walls of the ground floor modules display the words Us & We...there is no Them. This will be written in 16 different languages in traditional calligraphy methods. We want visitors to celebrate and appreciate the different stresses in line, shape and meaning. The written script could be tactile – raised or recessed using laser cutting/CNC technology, and there is further potential that invited calligraphers could be recorded/interviewed, whilst reproducing the quote or their interpretation of it. Several entry points invite visitors into a central gathering space. The open-ended boxes provide framed views of the surrounding landscape, sculptures, buildings, trees and sky. The ceiling treatment of the shapes above are mirrored reflecting the viewer, the surrounding landscape, and the differing floor treatments of the modules above.

“It’s skin is it’s structure, and it’s structure is it’s skin”

We want visitors to be able to enjoy and wonder at the structure, shape, tactility, and reflections. Each tapered box will be made from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). Whilst referencing nature our scheme celebrates being man made with its angular forms and large uniform surfaces. Our structure is a deliberate and considered intervention that invites exploration. The central gathering space encourages listening (we would like to explore audio being used), reflection and movement both through and around the structure.

Mirroring ourselves and environment - stillness & movement

We use a mirror finish to create reflections. By projecting out the mirror into the central space, it will not only reflect what is on the floor of the modules but everything below. We take this idea/device further and mirror the projecting wall of each box above ground level. This will allow reflections and impossible views to be taken in from the outside of the structure. The floors of the timber modules above ground level will each display a graphic. Our thinking is to reference nature, clouds, trees, and water. The optimum angle of both ceiling and wall mirror will need careful consideration.

Reuse the modules...again & again

The scheme allows the modules to be reused post deinstallation. With some additional detailing there is potential to distribute the modules to libraries, schools and public forecourt spaces. The modules have potential to be linked together and can be arranged in several different configurations. The uniform surfaces provide opportunities for both internal and external displays.
