Taking cues from the abutting industrial zone, the project seeks to challenge the typical suburban vernacular

Located in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, the project sets out to provide compact affordable housing on a highly restrictive site. In order to maintain the existing street character, the existing dwelling to the front was fully retained. This provided a number of planning challenges, which inevitably dictated the planning of the rear dwellings. Refraining from a mirrored design, the units are distinguished by nuances in form, colour, materiality and spatial arrangements. Both dwelling promote diverse living arrangements and have a unique set of characteristics, including multi-story living and raked ceilings, providing a creative response to current market trends and adjacent built form.
